Santiago is the capital of Chile and, in turn, main town of the country, known as Metropolitan or Metropolitan Region. It was founded on February 12, 1541 by Spanish conquistador Pedro de Valdivia. It has a total of 37 communes, 26 of which are located in the urban area and 11 in their surroundings.
At present, Santiago de Chile has an area of 641.4 km2 and has a population of 6,269,629 inhabitants, according to estimates from the National Institute of Statistics in 2006, equivalent to about 40% of the total population the country.
